2016 competition round-up

This is one of our occasional round-ups of the competitions that the club will be attending over the next few months. It is not a complete list of all the competitions where the club might have a presence but it does list the competitions that we know about at the moment.

First of all, and of greatest interest to the club as a whole, Judo Scotland has announced the complete Grand Prix schedule for 2016.

Although there is only online entry available for the Ultimate Open Grand Prix at the moment, it is possible to enter all of the competitions by post at this point in time.

I’ve marked in bold those competitions that are suitable for all age and experience levels.

2016 Scottish Open This competition is suitable for only a few in the club and it is essential that you speak to a coach before entering (closing date is 08/01/2015 – so get your skates on if you intend to enter!)

Midland Area Age Band (21 years) Judo Championships on 30-31st January 2016. This competition is suitable for Cadets and some Pre-Cadets but check with a coach before entering. The competition will be held at Walsall Campus Magdalene Road Walsall WS1 3TA. The closing date for entries is Monday 18th January 2016. You can enter by post or online.

2016 Ultimate Open Grand Prix on 21st February 2016 at Meadowbank Stadium, 139-143 London Rd, Edinburgh, Midlothian EH7 6AE. The closing date for entries is Friday 12th February at 12 noon. You can enter online.

HMC Independent Schools Boys Judo Tournament will be held in High Wycombe Judo Club on Saturday 27th February 2016. The closing date for entries is 19th February 2016 and the entry form is here. This is listed for completeness. Those who are going should have entered by now.

The 2016 North West Area Age Banded Championships will be held in Blackburn Academy, Feilden street, Blackburn, Lancashire, BB2 1LH on the 27-28th February 2016. This competition is suitable only for Cadets and more experienced Pre-Cadets. Please speak to a coach before entering to make sure that the competition is suitable for you.

2016 JudoScotland / Sportif International competition will be held in Meadowbank Sports Centre, Edinburgh, Scotland UK on 26th March 2016. It is followed by the 2016 Sportif International Tour Camp on 27th-29th March 2016 (also at Meadowbank). This is generally quite a tough competition so speak to a coach before entering. You should also speak to a coach regarding the training camp.

2016 British Schools Championships will be held on the 2-3rd April 2016.

  • Saturday 2nd April 2016: Academic Years 8 and 9, and Academic Years 10 and 11
  • Sunday 3rd April 2016: Academic Years 6 and 7, and Academic Years 12 and 13

There are grade and competition history restrictions on entry.
The grade restrictions are:

  • Academic years 6 and 7: born 1st Sept 2003 – 31st Aug 2005 minimum grade – orange belt
  • Academic years 8 and 9: born 1st Sept 2001 – 31st Aug 2003 minimum grade – orange belt

  • Academic years 12 and 13: born 1st Sept 1997 – 31st Aug 1999 minimum grade – blue belt

We think the competition history restrictions will be as follows (the main competition page does not yet specify any such restrictions but the priority entry competitions for English-domiciled judoka do state these restrictions):

  • Years 6 & 7: No eligibility restrictions.
  • This is a Level 3 Development event for Academic Years 8 to 13 and is NOT open to the following:
    • Years 8 & 9: Any player who has won a medal at the British Pre-Cadet or Cadet Championships in the last two years (December 2014 – December 2015). EXCEPTION: any player who won fewer
than two contests at either event IS eligible.
    • Years 10 – 13: Any player with 100 points or more of the British Cadet or Junior Ranking Lists at 31st December 2015.

Open Entry: The open entry period will begin on 19th Feb 2016 and close on 11th March 2016 OR when 750 entries have been received. As English-domiciled judoka are are eligible for priority entry, it is essential that you enter as soon as the open entry is available. Online entry will be available.

This competition is suitable for all eligible to enter.

Older players should note that this event usually clashes with the Great North Open ranking event and they will wish to attend that. No details have been announced for the 2016 Great North Open and so it would be prudent to delay entering the 2016 Granite City Open until the date for the 2016 Great North Open has been published.

This competition is suitable for all.

The 2016 British Masters Championships will be held on the 15th October 2016 at Ravenscraig – that’s all we know!

The 2016 British Senior Championships will be held on 11th December 2016 in Sheffield. The competition is suitable for only a few players and they should know who they are!

Not listed in the above is the Hibari Kan Junior Open. It is generally around the end of October. We suggest that you should pencil in 22nd October 2016 but that is a speculation.

That’s the list as of 04/01/2016 – like all plans it can be subject to change so it never harms to check closer to the date with one of the coaches that the club is still planning to attend a given competition. It is also possible that some competitions might change dates or be cancelled.

Happy New Year!

Pictures from the Glasgow University Team Judo event

Susie has sent in a link to the Glasgow University Sports Association Facebook page which has a whole load of photographs from the Glasgow University Team Judo event at the end of November 2015 where the Clyde Judo Club team Team Laura narrowly failed to win the Gold medal.

The photos are in the album here.
