News from Renfrewshire's premier Judo club

Month: August 2015

Reminder – Changed session times on Tuesdays

Just a reminder that the times for the Tuesday evening sessions held in Park Mains High School change from tomorrow (01/09/2015).

Sessions for Under-13 judoka run from 1900 until 2015 and for older children and young adults from 2015-2145.

Forthcoming competitions and events

I thought a quick round-up of the competitions and events that the club will be attending over the next few months might be useful.

Competitions:

  • The Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games in Manchester on 3-6 September 2015. Entry to this competition is by invitation only and it’s fantastic that we will have Connor, Louis, Rachel (Towle), Erin and Laura (Hewitt) in the Scottish team at the School Games.
  • The Heart of England Open on Saturday 05/09/2015 at Walsall Judo Centre. Entry for the competition has closed – you should know by now if you intend to attend!
  • North of England Ranking Championships on Sunday 27/09/2015 in Bradford. This competition is suitable only for Cadets (C-band) and older. The closing date for entries is 13/09/2015.
  • Granite City Open Grand Prix on Saturday 03/10/2015 in Aberdeen. The competition is suitable for all but speak to one of the coaches before entering if this will be your first competition. The closing date for entries is 25/09/2015.
  • The Great North Open on Saturday 03/10/2015 in Gateshead. This competition is suitable only for Cadets and older. NB The date of the competition is correct – we will have teams in Aberdeen and Gateshead on the same day. No closing date has been stated.
  • Hibarikan Junior Open on Saturday 24/10/2015 at Larkhall Leisure Centre. The competition is suitable for all (NB there is a maximum grade for the categories – details on the entry form) but speak to one of the coaches before entering if this will be your first competition. The closing date for entries is 19/10/2015.
  • 2015 Flanders International Judo Cup 31/10/2015-01/11/2015 in Lommel, Flanders. Entry to this competition is by invitation from Judo Scotland only. We are fortunate to have several judoka on the JS TD Performance Squad who will be going.
  • Scottish Age Bands on 14-15 November 2015 at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre. The competition is suitable for all but speak to one of the coaches before entering if this will be your first competition. The closing date for entries is 06/11/2015.
  • 2015 British Championships for Pre-Cadets and Cadets on Saturday & Sunday 05/12/2015-06/12/2015 in Sheffield. Entry details are not yet available so keep your eye on the linked page if you intend to enter. The competition will be restricted to green belts and above. You should only enter this competition after you have spoken to one of the coaches to make sure that it is suitable.
  • 2015 British Championships for Juniors and Seniors in Sheffield on 12-13/12/2015. Only a couple of folk are eligible to enter this competition and they should know who they are! If in doubt, speak to one of the coaches.

Events:

  • Glasgow Cluster Clubs at Mount Vernon Community Centre on 06/09/2015. This is a good event for those who do not attend competitions and is suitable for those 12 years of age and under. If you are interested in arranging a car share to the event then speak to one of the coaches.
  • European Open for Men on Saturday 10/10/2015 in Glasgow. A chance to see some top-flight Judo at a great price. Tickets are a very reasonable £5 & £2.50. We should have a crowd going from the club (not counting the many who are helping out at the event) and, as there are no seat numbers on the tickets, we should be able to get together to enjoy some fantastic Judo – not to be missed!
  • The Gathering in Tulliallan on 07/11/2015-08/11/2015: “With 2 World Championship titles, 5 European titles & 14 Olympic, World and European medals between them, what a line up we have in store for everyone this year. Neil Adams , Graeme Randall, Euan Burton and Stuart McWatt showcase the glittering talent Great Britain has had to offer since the late seventies through to present day.” One for those 14 and above.
  • Skill sCool (West) on 22/11/2015 at Linwood. This is a great fun event for those who don’t go to competitions and conveniently local!
  • Jimmy Pedro Masterclass 2015 13/09/2015 in Meadowbank. There is a shorter morning session for those under 13 years from 0900-1130 and a longer afternoon session for older judoka 1130-1600 (with a break for lunch around 1300).

As ever, please note that competition entry often closes early – get that entry in now!

And if in doubt about the suitability of competition – ask one of the coaches.

Recent Dan grading results

Congratulations to Aiden McArdle, Marcus Ray and Louis Saez who have all been promoted to 1st Dan.

It’s not the end of the journey but it is a big milestone in any judoka’s career and recognition of a tremendous amount of dedicated hard work on the part of Aiden, Marcus and Louis – A credit to themselves and the club.

Well done!
